DAY 1: NJP/Bagdogra to Sillery Gaon – Begin Your Silk Route Adventure
Your journey on one of the most scenic silk route tour packages begins as you arrive at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport. This route is especially popular for travellers looking for a silk route tour from Kolkata, as it offers a refreshing escape from city life into the peaceful hills of East Sikkim.
From the plains, the drive slowly climbs into the quiet mountain landscape, leading you to Sillery Gaon. This charming Himalayan village sits at an altitude of around 6,000 feet and is surrounded by pine forests and cinchona plantations. On a clear day, the distant snow-covered peaks of Kanchenjunga and the winding Teesta River make the scenery even more memorable.
Sillery Gaon is appreciated for its calm atmosphere and sweeping mountain views rather than luxury facilities. After arrival, check in to your homestay and spend the evening relaxing in the serene forest surroundings.
DAY 2: Sillery Gaon to Aritar – Lakes, Monasteries and Mountain Views
Wake up to the crisp mountain air and enjoy breakfast before continuing towards Aritar (around 4,600 ft), one of the most picturesque stops in East Sikkim.
The day begins with a visit to Lampokhri Lake. Located at an altitude of approximately 1,498 metres, this natural lake is surrounded by forested hills and is known for its peaceful setting. Boating is also available here, making it one of the most enjoyable experiences of the journey.
Later, head to Mankhim Viewpoint (around 4,500 ft), where the elevated location opens up beautiful views of the valleys and surrounding mountain ranges. The route also includes a visit to the historic Aritar Monastery (around 4,500 ft), an important spiritual landmark of the region.
Another interesting stop is the old Aritar Dak Bungalow (around 4,500 ft), which adds a touch of heritage to the day’s sightseeing. After exploring the area, return to your homestay and enjoy a relaxed evening in the quiet surroundings of Aritar.
DAY 3: Aritar to Zuluk – Through the Scenic Gateway of East Sikkim
After breakfast, begin your journey towards Zuluk (around 10,000 ft), travelling through some of the most beautiful landscapes included in many silk route tour packages. This stretch of road passes through the eastern Himalayan slopes of Pakyong district and gradually climbs from the lower valleys into the high-altitude Silk Route belt.
The drive takes you towards Rongli, an important gateway town for travellers entering the protected mountain region. Rongli lies beside the Rongli River at an elevation of around 5,200 feet and functions as a key checkpoint for permits and movement into the higher Silk Route areas. The settlement is surrounded by steep hills, river bends and forested slopes, making it an important geographical transition point on the route.
Along the way, you pass Rongli Dam (around 5,200 ft), a small hydro and water structure built on the river, before continuing to Lingtam (around 4,500 ft), a quiet mountain hamlet tucked into the forested hills. Lingtam sits on the winding road between Rongli and Zuluk and is known for its peaceful setting, cool climate and scattered hillside homes.
A stop at Lingtam Monastery (around 4,500 ft) gives you a chance to experience the calm spiritual atmosphere of the region. The route then continues to Keukhela Falls (around 4,500 ft), a scenic waterfall set amid the forested slopes between Rongli and Lingtam. Fed by mountain runoff, the cascade drops through a narrow gorge and adds a refreshing natural stop to the journey.
As the road climbs higher, the scenery changes steadily and the journey leads to Zuluk. Located at roughly 10,000 feet, Zuluk is a high-altitude village on the historic Old Silk Route. It sits on the eastern shoulder of the Himalayas and is famous for its dramatic mountain setting, winding roads and wide views of the surrounding ridges. The village also lies on the old trade corridor that once connected Sikkim with Tibet through Jelep La.
Upon arrival, check in to your homestay and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remote Himalayan destination.
DAY 4: Zuluk to Nathang Valley – Sunrise, Mountain Passes and High-Altitude Landscapes
Day 4 is one of the most spectacular stages of the Silk Route journey. An early start is recommended so that you can witness the changing colours of the Himalayan sky from the famous viewpoints along the route. This section of the drive moves through the high-altitude border zone of East Sikkim, where the landscape shifts from forested slopes to open ridges and alpine terrain.
The journey begins towards Lungthung (around 11,500 ft), passing through the famous winding roads of the Old Silk Route. The Bhulbhuliya or Zig-Zag Road (around 10,000 ft) is one of the most memorable sections of the drive, with a series of sharp bends carved into the steep mountainside. This road is not only scenic but also a remarkable example of mountain engineering in a difficult terrain.
Continue towards Thambi Viewpoint, located at an altitude of approximately 11,200 feet. Set on a ridge above Zuluk, the viewpoint is famous for its sweeping views of the Himalayan ranges and is considered one of the best places in the region to watch sunrise over the mountains.
Further ahead lies Lungthung, a high-altitude hamlet perched on the ridge line above the valley. From this elevated location, the surrounding landscape appears dramatically different from the lower settlements, with open slopes, thin air and wide mountain horizons.
The route then continues towards Tukla Valley (around 12,000 ft), an open alpine basin associated with the Tukla War Memorial (around 12,000 ft). This area lies close to the historic mountain corridor that once formed part of the trade route between India and Tibet.
Jeelpla Pass View [Altitude: 13,999 ft.]: Jeelp-la pass, which means The Lovely Level Pass, is located nearby Tukla valley at an altitude of almost 14,000 ft. It is a mountain pass between India and Tibet Autonomous Region (China). It directly connects India to Lhasa (11,975 ft) in Tibet and was used by ancient traders of the Silk route. Although it is higher than Nathula Pass (14,140 ft), it is the easiest pass among all the passes in Sikkim. Nowadays, the pass is prohibited for civilians.
The journey proceeds towards Jelep La (13,999 ft), the legendary mountain pass that served as an important link on the old trans-Himalayan trade network.
Another significant stop on the route is the Old Baba Mandir (around 13,123 ft), a high-altitude shrine associated with Baba Harbhajan Singh. Located in the upper border belt, it has become an important landmark for travellers moving through this remote Himalayan region.
By evening, arrive at Nathang Valley. Situated at approximately 13,200 feet, Nathang is a broad alpine valley surrounded by barren ridges and open mountain slopes. Because of its dry, windswept terrain and dramatic high-altitude setting, it is often described as the “Ladakh of East Sikkim.” The valley lies in a rain-shadow zone, which gives it a stark and beautiful landscape unlike the greener lower hills.
Depending on the season, the valley may be covered in snow, dotted with alpine vegetation or washed in shades of brown and gold. The weather can be extremely cold, so warm clothing is essential.
DAY 5: Nathang Valley to Rongpokhola – From High Mountains to Riverside Serenity
After breakfast, begin your descent from the high-altitude landscape of Nathang Valley towards Rongpokhola.
The journey offers a dramatic change in scenery. The cold, open mountain environment gradually gives way to greener valleys and warmer surroundings as you travel towards the lower elevations.
Rongpokhola is situated at approximately 6,000 feet and is known for its peaceful riverside setting. After reaching the destination and completing check-in, spend the rest of the day relaxing beside the river.
Depending on local conditions and the season, visitors can enjoy activities such as spending time beside the river, fishing or experiencing the refreshing natural surroundings. The calm environment makes Rongpokhola an ideal place to unwind after several days of mountain travel.
DAY 6: Rongpokhola to NJP/Bagdogra – End of Your Silk Route Journey
After breakfast, it is time to leave the peaceful surroundings of Rongpokhola and begin the return journey towards New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport.

Some Facts To Know Before Booking Silk Route Tour Packages From Kolkata
Silk Route is considered as a remote but pristine sikkim offbeat destination which has limited modern facilities and amenities. Some travelers may have fancy conception regarding foods, facilities, amenities and hotel rooms of this place. So let's understand first some basic facts that you must know before Silk Route Tour Package Booking from Kolkata.
Do not expect modern facilities during your Silk Route package tour from Kolkata as most of the places are remote villages and away from modern cities and amenities. Guests can get general facilities like western commode, running water, hot meals (mostly egg curry and local vegetables), etc but no luxury meals, furniture, tv, internet connection, cable channel, geyser, mineral water on demand, etc.
Staying in Nathang Valley is not recommended for children and elderly people. Situated at an altitude of 13,200 ft, Gnathang Valley or Nathang is very popular among Silk Route traveler and known as "Ladakh of the East India" due to its geographical similarities of Leh Ladakh. But on the other hand guests travelling Nathang Valley can experience dizziness, vomiting, headaches due to this extreme altitude and cold. Here to mention that night in Nathang is bitter cold and temperature can drop down to sub zero temperature. In that case NatureWings suggest elderly traveler to visit Nathang in daytime only and they must return to a lower altitude after spending some time there. If possible a portable oxygen cylinder can be carried with them for safety.
Guests must carry original and photocopy of ID proof like voter card, driving license, passport along with at least 2 passport size color photograph. Birth certificate or school id must be carried for the children or minor.
Guests must always carry enough dry fruits, nuts, chocolate, hot coffee, Popcorn, Ginger cubes and biscuits for emergency purposes as you don't know when adverse situation like landslide, road blocks, and snow storm arrives. So as an precaution you must carry a portable Oxygen cylinder and Oxygen meter in car. In case any serious emergency Indian Army and BRO is always there to help you.
For Gnathang Valley, Kupup, Elephant Lake or Hati Lake always carry Camphor, Chocolate, Ginger cubes etc as these place are situated at high altitude and cause breathing issues. If you have doctor prescribed medicine, please carry those also.
Medicine for fever, cold, cough, headache, stomach upset, and paracetamol, ointment, band-aid, vaseline, boroline, volini sprey etc must be in the first aid box while traveling the old silk route.
Good amount of woolen clothes, gloves, hats, wind-protective glass, must be taken as in some places sub-zero temperature may prevail.
Guests must carry adequate cash in small denomination as in Old Silk Rout as there are not ATM facilities after Rongli. So, before travelling high altitude, make sure you have enough cash with you. It is better to withdraw cash from NJP or Bagdogra as there are many ATM’s. In high altitude sometime withdrawing cash may not be possible because of link failure and non-refilling of hard cash in ATMs.
GST is applicable to the Silk Route tour package cost.
Bikers travelling to Silk Route need to carry valid documents for vehicles. If failed to produce valid paper, your Silk Route tour adventure may land in trouble, so proper document of Bike is a strict compliance.
During your Silk Route tour from Kolkata, NatureWings will not suggest you to consume liquor at high altitude. But if you are passionate to it, please carry your own brand with you as in high altitude, you may not find many options or your favorite brand.
If you visit forest area in lower altitude like SilleryGaon, Ramdhura, Rongpokhola, be careful with leeches.
Sikkim is a plastics free state. So please do not throw any plastic bags, bottles. You are requested to "PLEASE TAKE NOTHING BUT PICTURES AND LEAVE NOTHING BUT FOOTPRINTS".
And most importantly, as you have come long way to enjoy your trip, so dont think too much with what you have and haven't. Just enjoy your Silk Route tour packages with NatureWings Holidays.

Had the opportunity for an Old Silk Route Tour from NJP (East Sikkim) namely Mankhim, Zuluk, Lungthung and lastly Rongpokhola organised by Naturewings. Our POC Mr Ankan Das, supported by Mr Rajkumar Das made it very crisp with the formalities and this 5N6D trip was just a memorable one. Starting from homely vibes to enjoying our hearts out on the way through some elegant and breathing landscapes from one location to another.. The evenings were made warm with some good snacks service and group fun without any hindrance. It was hard to find a complaint on the service, or quality of food or the friendly nature of the management not only from the Homestays but also from Mr Ankan....

We travelled the Silk Route in Sikkim for 5N/6D with NatureWings from 9-14 April, 2023. We enjoyed the trip immensely which was organised by them very carefully. Mr. Rajkumar Hazra and Mr. Ankan Das explained the tour details and answered all our queries promptly. They kept in touch with us on daily basis.
The car and the driver (Mr. LB Tamang), the homestays were all very good. The owners took good care of us. The team led by Buddhaji at Oongking Heem Resort at Rongpokhola deserve special mention for their attention to the smallest details for our comfort. To summarise, I must say that we have found a reliable tour organiser in NatureWings and we would like to travel with them again.

"NATUREWINGS organasied our Silk Route Tour on last November 18 with transport and staying and they did provide some real good homestays with excellent food. The office staffs, especially AKASH DUTTA did help a lot through out the tour and before journey uncertainties were taken care and solved.
The organised the most beautiful homestay in most of the places, especially the homestay at upper Mankhim was such a bliss... I would request them to rethink about the ZULUK staying as it was not upto the mark at all.
We had some issues with delayed pick up and change of driver with the car but it ended happily...we were there during Diwali so they had their own emotional engagement. But it seemed managing car is a problem to most of the tourist as you cannot communicate with them when its needed. Bur we did have a safe journey.
overall the experience was good but apart from AKASH we did not get the needed communication from anyone from the agency. But it is such a great place and tour to remember these things...I wish them good luck."
